Albania: Violent Unrest Continues In Vlore

Tirana, 12 May 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Schools in Albania are closed today following the storming of a police station in the port city of Vlore yesterday that left at least one officer dead. Meanwhile, authorities say three other people were killed in Vlore yesterday by gunfire.

Altogether, 12 Vlore residents have been killed in violent unrest during the past three days. The Interior Ministry says yesterday's attack on the police station was an attempt by outlaws to steal armored vehicles parked nearby.

The ministry says two Vlore residents were shot in their homes yesterday while a third was the victim of a stray bullet. More than 150 people have been killed in Vlore since Albania's army depots were looted for machine guns and ammunition in March. Country-wide, more than 1,000 people have died in the anarchy.
