Washington, 14 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - The White House says U.S. President Bill Clinton and Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel are expected to have an informal meeting in Washington this Friday evening (Washington time).
Havel has been in Washington since Tuesday. He's met senior members of the U.S. Congress to discuss Prague's desire to join the NATO military alliance. Havel is also scheduled to receive the 1996 European Statesman award from the Institute for East-West Studies at a banquet in New York City tomorrow night. However, no formal meeting with President Clinton had been planned for this visit.
The White House said today that Clinton and Havel will be among the guests at a private dinner in Washington on Friday. The White House declined to say who was sponsoring the event. It will not be at the White House.
