Kyiv, 19 May 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The sole working reactor at Ukraine's Chornobyl nuclear plant has been shut down along with a reactor at Ukraine's Zaporizhska nuclear plant, due to power failures.
Officials at Chornobyl said the plant's sole functioning reactor was taken off line yesterday after a failure in the electrical supply to the reactor's generator. No increased radiation was reported.
Meanwhile, the number 2 reactor at the Zaporizhska plant, 400km southeast of Kyiv, was closed today after oil inside a transformer overheated. Plant spokeswoman Larisa Merkulova said the shut-down was automatic. No injuries or increased radiation were reported. Minor accidents have prompted reactors at Zaporizhska, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, to be shut down six times in the past two months. One of its six reactors is currently off line for planned repairs.
