Washington, 22 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - The State Department says President Bill Clinton has appointed a special envoy to work exclusively on war crimes issues in former Yugoslavia.
Spokesman Nicholas Burns told reporters that Clinton chose David Scheffer to be an ambassador-at-large. Scheffer was an aide specializing in war crimes issues to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright when she was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Albright is scheduled to make a visit to Bosnia next weekend for talks with Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic.
