Turkmenistan: Floods Cause One Death, Damage In Capital

Ashgabat, 6 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Floods resulting from heavy rains earlier this week have killed a child and led to damage in Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat.

Our correspondent reports several homes, government buildings, and communication lines were damaged.

The official Turkmenpress news agency, in its first report on the floods yesterday, said the cabinet has allocated the equivalent of $250,000 from a state fund to help the victims and finance repair work.

The flooding hit southern districts of Ashgabat as well as the small resort of Pevrize, 22 kilometers southwest of the capital.
