Prague, 12 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Spokesmen for Croatia's Social Democratic presidential candidate Zdravko Tomac said today that the Zagreb city authorities will not give Tomac a permit to hold an election rally in central Jelacic Square tomorrow.
The spokesmen say they interpret the authorities' decision as tantamount to a ban on the rally. No reason was reportedly given for the authorities' decision.
President Franjo Tudjman, who is seeking a third five-year term, will hold a rally in Jelacic Square later today.
Liberal candidate Vlado Gotovac spoke there last night.
Latest opinion polls indicate Tomac trailing Tudjman going into Sunday's presidential elections.
