Moscow, 13 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- A court in the Far East Russian city of Petropavlov has sentenced the killer of a 14-year-old girl to 15 years imprisonment.
The case drew attention last April when the girl's mother shot and wounded Oleg Sasov, the man who has since been convicted of the rape and murder of the girl.
The girl's mother was arrested for the incident, but was released following protests by local residents. The report said prosecutors are still planning to bring the girl's mother to trial for her actions.
Reports say many local residents are now protesting that Sasov's crime warranted a more serious punishment.
Sasov will spend the first five years of his sentence in prison and the remainder in a prison work colony.
