Bulgaria: Zhivkov To Be Tried Later This Month

Sofia, 16 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Our Sofia correspondent reports that Bulgaria's former Communist leader, Todor Zhivkov, is to be tried by a military court later this month.

The court will try Zhivkov for his role in the attempt to forcibly assimilate Bulgaria's Turkish minority in the 1980s. The military prosecutor's office told RFE/RL that former Zhivkov Chief of Staff Milko Balev and former Interior Minister Dimiter Stoyanov will also be prosecuted.

A previous attempt to try Zhivkov on the same charges was rejected by the court for lack of evidence.
