Budapest, 17 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - German Economics Minister Guenter Rexrodt arrived in Budapest today from the Slovak Republic. Guenter is on a tour to promote commercial and trade ties in the eastern European region.

Officials (unnamed) say Rexrodt is to discuss bilateral trades issues and Hungary's potential membership in the European Union with Prime Minister Gyula Horn and other top officials.

In Bratislava earlier today, Rexrodt met Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar to discuss ways to boost German-Slovak trade relations. Rexrodt said German industry is interested in taking party in the privatization of the Slovak telecommunications company, in modernizing power plants and in expanding infrastructural projects.
