Russia: Supreme Court Rules Against Korzhakov

Moscow, 18 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Russia's Supreme Court today rejected a wrongful-dismissal suit filed against President Boris Yeltsin by his former bodyguard, General Aleksandr Korzhakov.

Korzhakov filed the suit last year, after he was fired by Yeltsin and ordered stripped of his military ranks. Yeltsin's order accused Korzhakov of disloyalty and of staining the honor of a Russian officer. But Korzhakov denied the accusation and brought his own charges against Yeltsin, saying the dismissal order damaged his honor and dignity.

The court's decision against Korzhakov cannot be appealed. The former Yeltsin aide was also ordered to pay eight million rubles ($ 1,400) in legal expenses connected with the case.
