Washington, 19 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has appointed Romanian diplomat Liviu Bota as resident Special Representative for Georgia and Head of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia.
Bota assumes the post on July 1. He has been the deputy special envoy for Georgia monitoring developments in Georgia's conflict with Abkhaz separatists since October 1995.
He has also served as head of the UN observer mission in Tajikistan and Senior Advisor to the UN Under-Secretary-General for Human Rights in Geneva.
Bota worked in the Romanian Foreign Ministry from 1961-71 before joining the United Nations diplomatic staff in 1971 in Bucharest.
