Ukraine: President Is Happy With NATO Agreement

By Giovanni Benzi and Lev Roitman

Madrid, 8 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma says he is satisfied with an agreement his country reached with NATO.

Speaking today at a news conference in Madrid, Kuchma said that Ukraine "obtained what it wanted." Kuchma said that he had discussed the content of the agreement with Russia's President Boris Yeltsin and Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. He also said that the agreement was "modeled" on that reached between Russia and NATO last May.

Kuchma said that he did not expect any disagreement with Russia on the issue of relations between Ukraine and NATO. He said that the agreement corresponds to national interests of both Ukraine and Russia.

The Ukraine-NATO charter on bilateral relations is to be signed tomorrow in Madrid.
