Washington, 16 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - The White House says U.S. Vice President Al Gore stressed the importance of reforms during a meeting yesterday with President Askar Akayev of Kyrgyzstan.

An official in Gore's office (unnamed) told our Washington correspondent that Gore and Akayev discussed the importance of continuing political and economic reforms in Kyrgyzstan.

He said they also discussed the scope of U.S. assistance and general issues related to stability and security in Central Asia.

Akayev was on a week-long visit to the United States to improve bilateral ties.
