Turkmenistan: Short News Items


Ashgabat, 18 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Military officials in Pakistan said today that they would help Turkmenistan train its navy personnel. Fasih Bokhari, chief of staff for Pakistan's navy, reportedly made the statement after a meeting Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyasov in Ashgabat.

Bokhari also is quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying that Islamabad is prepared to help strengthen Turkmenistan's sea frontier in the Caspian. The Pakistani official is visiting Turkmenistan through Sunday. He is due to hold meetings with officials in the foreign and defense ministries, as well as with Turkmenistan's border guards.

Kuchma To Visit Turkmenistan In September



Our correspondent in Ashgabat reports that Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma has accepted an invitation to visit Turkmenistan in September.

The visit reportedly was arranged during a telephone conversation between Kuchma and Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov. During the conversation Niyazov and Kuchma also reportedly exchanged views on bilateral cooperation.

Reports say the two leaders also agreed to set up an intergovernmental working group to discuss issues concerning the delivery to Ukraine of gas produced in Turkmenistan.
