Tajikistan: Prisoner Exchange Postponed Again

Dushanbe, 18 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - The exchange of 50 prisoners each between the Tajik government and the United Tajik Opposition has been delayed again today.

Our correspondent says the reason for today's postponement was a list submitted by the government to the opposition last night which named the 50 captives the government wants returned first. The opposition is complying with the government request and is currently ascertaining the whereabouts of those on the list. The exchange is now planned for tomorrow.

United Nations special envoy Gerd Merrem had said earlier that the two sides would each hand over 50 prisoners today at Tavil-Dara. The exchange, originally set for earlier this week, has been previously delayed for what were described as "technical reasons."
