Russia: Chechen Security Chief Dismissed

Grozny, 21 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - The National Security Council chief of Russia's breakaway republic of Chechnya, Abu Movsayev, was dismissed Saturday by Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov.

Our correspondent says Chechen Vice President Vakha Arsanov announced the dismissal, saying Movsayev's performance was judged to be unsatisfactory.

Earlier this month, Movsayev announced he was resigning but he later withdrew his resignation without explanation.

Movsayev was a popular field commander during Chechnya's almost 22-month long war with Russia.
