Azerbaijan: Major Sentenced To Death For Spying For Armenia

Baku, 23 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - A military tribunal in Baku yesterday sentenced a major in the Azerbaijani army to death after he was found guilty of spying for Armenia.

Our correspondent in Baku says Karim Barashev passed on secrets to Armenia between 1993 and 1996. Our correspondent says the military tribunal of the Azerbaijani supreme court said he had violated more than five articles of the country's criminal code. Among the charges, Barashev was found guilty of having passed on state secrets, abuse of office, and illegally carrying a weapon.

Our correspondent says the tribunal also sentenced three other lower level Azerbaijani officers from five to 15 years on charges of espionage.
