Almaty, 23 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, chairing a session of the Security Council yesterday, harshly criticized the work of the state committees on taxation and customs.

Our correspondents report from Almaty that Nazarbayev said "inappropriate work" by the committees during the last 6 months had cost Kazakhstan's state treasury some 13,000 millions Tenges (some $175 million).

During the meeting, it was said that criminal cases have been brought against 29 officials from the Taxation Committee and 22 from the Customs Committee over the last 6 months.
