Tirana, 25 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Albanian president Rexhep Mejdani swore in the country's new government today. Mejdani urged the ministers -- leaders from five left and center-left parties -- to do their utmost to restructure democratic institutions.
Prime Minister Fatos Nano, also head of the Socialist Party, leads the new government. His deputy premier is fellow party member Bashkim Fino, who headed the interim government leading up to Albanian elections last month.
Albania's new Interior Minister is Democratic Alliance leader and archaeologist Neritan Ceka. The new Foreign Minister is Paskal Milo, deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party and a history professor.
Meanwhile, a bomb placed in a building killed three people in northeast Albania today, and wounded at least 16 more.
Interior Ministry spokesman Ndrek Gjini said the explosives destroyed three floors of an apartment block in the town of Peshkopi. There are no details of the motive for the bombing.
