Tajikistan: Three Sons Of Muslim Leader Kidnapped

Dushanbe, 4 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - Security Ministry officials in Tajikistan say that three sons of the country's Muslim spiritual leader have been kidnapped.

Itar Tass Saturday quoted the officials as saying that the sons, aged 29, 25 and 15, were taken from the home of Mufti Amunullo Negmatzoda late Thursday. The officials say that a ransom demand has been received, but little else is known.

Earlier reports had said that only two sons had been kidnapped when a group of 20 armed men entered the mufti's home some 10 kilometers southeast of the capital Dushanbe. The gunmen took weapons away from the mufti's bodyguards before seizing the sons. The mufti was not at home during the incident.
