Russia: Yeltsin To Meet Chechen President

Moscow, 7 August 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Russian Security Council Secretary Ivan Rybkin said today that Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov and Russian President Boris Yeltsin will meet next week for face-to-face talks.

Rybkin made the announcement after arriving in the Chechen capital Grozny today, where he plans to lay the groundwork for the meeting. Rybkin is to meet Chechen First Deputy Prime Minister Movladi Udugov and the head of Chechnya's oil company, Khodzhakhmed Yarikhanov, among other officials.

Plans to rebuild part of an oil pipeline connecting Azerbaijan with ports on the Russian Black Sea are expected to be high on the agenda. The pipeline transits Chechnya and disagreements remain over the fees Moscow will pay Grozny for its use.
