Azerbaijan: Bomb Explodes Near US Embassy

Prague/Baku: 11 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - The U.S. embassy in Baku said a bomb exploded on Friday near its premises.

An embassy spokesman told our correspondent the explosion occured next to the U.S. embassy gate, but that no one was hurt and the building did not incur any damage.

No one has yet claimed responsibility.

Our correspondent says the Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan has begun investigating the explosion.

The blast occured just hours after Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev returned to Baku from his first official visit to the United States.
