Prague, 12 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - Some 750 staff members of the Hungarian Television (MTV) will be dismissed this year, reducing the number of employees to below 3,000.

The announcement was made yesterday by the director general at MTV's presidential office, Sandor Skultety. He says that since the state owned television channel was transformed into a share holding company last year, 454 people have been sacked, including 219 this year.

MTV has paid out 290 million Forints ($1.5 million) in severance pay, and an additional 130 million in social insurance contributions. He says that in the near future, 49 editors, directors and producers will receive dismissal notices..
