Russia: Yeltsin and Chernomyrdin Discuss Budget

Moscow, 13 August 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin met today in the Kremlin with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Yeltsin's press-service said the meeting focused on the draft 1998 budget.

Interfax news agency reports that Chernomyrdin told Yeltsin that the government plans to approve a final version of the draft before the end of the State Duma's Summer recess. He said the Duma will receive the draft budget on 25 August.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anatoly Chubais said yesterday that the 1998 budget would be "a realistic and tight one."

The presidential press-service said Chernomyrdin also reported on the government's promised payment of delayed wages and pensions to the Army and to employees of the state sector.
