Poland: Refugees Turned Back To Lithuania

Vilnius, 15 August 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Lithuanian border guards have detained 62 refugees from Bangladesh and prevented them from crossing into Poland.

The Baltic News Service (BNS) reports that the Bangladeshis -- two of whom were so weak they needed medical attention -- were taken yesterday to a refugee detention center.

Lithuania is dealing with a growing number of refugees, especially from poorer Asian countries. Earlier this week, BNS said 60 refugees from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who tried to cross into Poland illegally were also sent back to Lithuania.
