Chisinau, Moldova; 29 August 1997 (RFE/RL) -- A Moldovan deputy who represents the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church says that Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Ciubuc is showing goodwill towards solving the problem of official recognition of the church.
The deputy, Vlad Cubreacov, met with Ciubic for two hours yesterday. Cubreacov told our correspondent in the capital Chisinau that the prime minister expressed general satisfaction with Bessarabian Church proposals for achieving recognition, although some governmental objections remain.
Earlier this week, the church had submitted amendments to its statutes with the aim of resolving issues raised by the government.
Moldovan President Petru Lucinschi reportedly has urged Metropolitan Vladimir of the rival Moldovan Orthodox Church not to make a tragedy of Bessarabian Church recognition. The Council of Europe has called for registration of the church.
