Tajikistan: Kidnappers Of Religious Leader Still Unknown

Dushanbe, 29 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - There has been no word yet on the identity of the kidnappers of a Tajik religious leader.

The kidnapping of the leader of Tajikistan's Sunni Muslims was officially reported earlier today. The Tajik Interior Ministry said mufti Amonullo Negmatzoda was abducted near Dushanbe Wednesday night.

Our corrrespondent says that as of this afternoon no one has taken reponsibility for the kidnapping and no ransom demands have been made.

Our correspondent says however that Negmatzoda may have been abducted by the kidnappers of two of his sons a month ago. Nezmatzoda had said he would not deal with the kidnappers but apparently was abducted after talks with them.

Sporadic clashes have continued to disrupt Tajikistan after a June peace accord between the government and the Islamic ooposition put an end to large-scale hostilities. The clashes have been mostly between rival clans or rebel group.
