Sofia, 1 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - Bulgarian officials say at least six coal miners were killed in a methane gas explosion today at the Bobov Dol mine about 70 kilometers southwest of Sofia.
The official Bulgarian BTA news agency says 20 miners had been pulled from the mine. At least twenty miners still remain trapped.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Ivan Kostov and Interior Minister Bogomil Bonev are traveling to the mine. Kostov, quoted by BTA, said a probe will be launched into what caused the tragedy.
