Azerbaijan: President Cancels Moscow Trip Because Of Armenian Treaty

Baku, 5 September 1997 (RFE/RL) -- A government official in Baku told RFE/RL today that concern over a new Russian-Armenian treaty is the reason behind the cancellation of President Heydar Aliyev's planned visit to Moscow during the city's 850th anniversary celebrations.

Our correspondent reports that the treaty, signed last week by Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosian, has made Azerbaijan wary about Russia's intentions as a mediator in the Armenian-Azerbaijani dispute.

Azerbaijan said its delegation to the Moscow festivities will be headed instead by Culture Minister Polad Byul-Byul.
