Washington, 19 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - A senior White House official says the U.S. and Russia will announce a new economic project next week that is aimed at improving regional economic development.
U.S. Vice President Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin are to make the announcement on Tuesday in Samara. The two will be convening the ninth regular meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic and Technical Cooperation, also known as the Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission.
The White House official told reporters yesterday that Gore and Chernomyrdin will unveil a program to attract private investments into Samara and Novgorod and other regions outside Moscow.
The commission will also meet in Moscow on Monday for talks on other agenda items. Gore is to leave for Washington on Wednesday.
