Washington, 2 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - President Emomali Rahmonov yesterday met Stephen Sestanovich, special adviser on newly independent states to U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
Rahmonov arrived yesterday in Washington from New York where he is attending United Nations General Assembly debates.
Our correspondent says the two officials met over lunch for more than an hour. There were no details, but the agenda called for discussions on U.S. assistance to Tajikistan, among other issues.
Rahmonov also met with officials of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Today, Rahmonov is scheduled to meet in Washington with Richard Morningstar, the coordinator for U.S. assistance to the region. And after that he is to return to New York for a scheduled meeting with Secretary of State Albright.
