Almaty, 9 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Strikes gripped parts of Kazakhstan today. Our correspondent says miners and other workers at plants in the Qaraghandy Oblast walked off the job today.
Our correspondent says thousands of workers have been thrown out of work after the Ispat Karmet Company, which owes a local coalmining operation, shut down several pits.
Meanwhile about 2,000 workers and supporters from the Achisay Polymetal plant in southern Kazakhstan today had their protest march stopped by Kazakhstan police near the Argyz Turkistan Canal. The protestors began their march on Almaty ten days ago to draw attention to their unpaid back wages.
