Romania: Students Protest New Exams

Bucharest, 10 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Some 10,000 Romanian high-school students brought traffic to a halt today as they marched through Bucharest to protest an increase in the number of graduation exams.

The students banged saucepans and blew whistles as they marched along the capital's main streets applauded by passers-by. Some of the students demanded the resignation of Education Minister Virgil Petrescu. No incidents were reported during today's demonstrations.

Thousands of students have taken to the streets throughout Romania this week to protest the Education Ministry's decision to raise to seven, from the previous four, the number of graduation exams.
