Uzbekistan: Agreement On Democracy Projects Expected

Vienna, 13 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - The government of Uzbekistan will sign an agreement with the OSCE this week on 10 projects intended to develop democracy.

An OSCE spokesman in Vienna said today that the projects include preparations for elections, training staff for the Constitutional Court and the Office of the Ombudsman, a program for education in human rights, assistance in migration issues and the development of relations between the Government and non-government organisations (NGO's).

The agreement will be signed in Tashkent by Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdul Aziz Khamilov and Akmal Saidov from Uzbekistan's national human rights center. The OSCE will be represented by the director of its Office for Democratic Institutions, Gerard Stoudmann.

An OSCE spokesman said today the agreement allows the Office for democratic institutions to hold regular consultations on implementing the projects, aimed at building and sustaining democratic institutions in Uzbekistan.
