Washington, 14 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Diplomats from the U.S. and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania hope to conclude work today on a charter agreement that will provide a vision of relations between the United States and the Baltic republics.
Delegations from Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius will meet at the State Department in Washington for the talks. Officials have said that if the charter is concluded this week, it could be ready for signing by the presidents of the four countries late next month or in early December.
Diplomats have said that the purpose of the charter is to strengthen ties between Washington and the Baltic states and to further the integration of the Baltic countries into Western institutions.
