Warsaw, 15 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Legislators of Poland's Solidarity Election Action (AWS) today nominated academic Jerzy Buzek as their candidate for prime minister of a new center-right coalition.
Observers say the selection by the party is expected to lead to Buzek, a 57-year-old chemistry professor, being officially asked to form a Solidarity-led government by President Aleksander Kwasniewski later today.
Buzek's Solidarity party emerged victorious in last month's general elections but failed to win a parliamentary majority.
