Baltic States: Kinkel Meets With Ministers About EU

Riga, 17 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel met in Riga today with officials from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to discuss attempts by the Baltic states to join the European Union.

Correspondents say Kinkel tried to introduce a greater sense of realism into the efforts of the republics to integrate with western Europe.

Kinkel met with Estonian Foreign Minister Toomas Hendrik Ilves, his Latvian counterpart, Valdis Birkavs, and Lithuania's Algirdas Saudargas. He is scheduled to meet with Latvian President Guntis Ulmanis later today.
