Prague, 31 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. Ambassador-at-Large Steven Sestanovich paid a brief visit to Dushanbe today, where he met with Tajikistan's President Imomali Rahmonov.
Sestanovich presented the Tajik leader with a letter from U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. After the meeting he told RFE/RL correspondents that he and Rahmonov discussed the implementation of the Tajik peace agreement, signed between the government and opposition in June.
Sestanovich said that the U.S. would contribute to the international conference of donor countries supporting the Tajik peace process. He added that the Tajik peace still faces difficulties, but said Washington hopes that the sides would be able to solve the problems.
Sestanovich arrived in Dushanbe after earlier stops in Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.
