Armenia: President Sends Message To Iran

Yerevan, 3 November 1997 (RFE/RL) -- A senior Armenian government official has met in Teheran with Iranian President Mohammad Khattami to pass on a message from Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrossian.

A report from the Armenian government press service today gave no details of the content of yesterday's message.

According to the press service Khattami and Armenian Operative Affairs Minister and chief of government staff Shahen Karamanukian discussed bilateral cooperation and reached an agreement on "concrete steps" which weren't specified. They also agreed that a lasting peace in the region will bring about economic prosperity and integration.

Karamanukian, who arrived in Iran on Saturday, has held talks mainly on economic issues with a number of key Iranian ministers. No details have been reported.

The president of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Arkadii Ghukasyan, proposed last month that Iran, together with Russia, France, the United States and Armenia, should guarantee Karabakh's security under any formal peace agreement.
