Samarkand, 14 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived today in the ancient Uzbek city of Samarkand as she continues her tour of Central Asian republics.
Our correspondent reports that in Samarkand, Mrs. Clinton visited the historical monuments of city and an artists association, named Meros. Talking to artists, Mrs. Clinton said that crafts help to revive art.
She also spoke on the importance of tourism and crafts for the country. Meros is a non-governmental organization sponsored by USAID. Later today Hillary Clinton left for Tashkent. Tomorrow she is traveling to Russia's city of Yekaterinburg.
