Romania: Cabinet Reshuffle Expected Next Week

Bucharest, 24 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea says long-anticipated Cabinet changes will be announced and put to a vote in Parliament next week. Ciorbea yesterday said the announcement will be made next Tuesday and debate and a vote in parliament is set for next Thursday.

Our correspondent cites Romanian media and analysts as saying ministers associated with economic reform and agriculture are most likely to be replaced. There has been strong criticism of the government's pace of reform, with some of the strongest criticism coming from within the governing coalition.

Key ministers such as Foreign Minister Adrian Severin and Defense Minister Victor Babiuc -- both from the junior coalition partner Democratic Party -- are viewed as likely to retain their posts.
