Ukraine: Financing Approved For Chornobyl Nuclear Plant Repairs

Kyiv, 11 May 1998 (RFE/RL) - Some $132 million has been made available today to strengthen the sarcophagus covering reactor number four of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant -- site of the world's worst civilian nuclear disaster.

The agreement was signed in Kyiv by Ukraine's Ecology Minister Yuri Kostenko, officials of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and a firm called Energo-Atom. Our correspondent in Kyiv reports that the money pledged to Energo Atom will go toward projects regarding civil engineering, operations and monitoring, emergency systems and fuel.

Ukraine's Nuclear Regulatory Authority also will receive funds for the licensing of its shelter implementation plan, which concerns the cap on Chornobyl's damaged unit four reactor.
