Prague, 6 August 1998 (RFE/RL) - Armenian Prosecutor-General Henrik Khachatrian was shot dead in his office in Yerevan early this afternoon. A senior official in the Prosecutor's Office told RFE/RL that the suspected
gunman, senior prosecutor Aram Karapetian, killed himself after shooting
Khachatrian. The motive for the shooting is not known.
Karapetian had worked in the office's criminal investigations department, and had served in the past as Armenia's chief transportation prosecutor.
An RFE/RL correspondent reports that the area around the Prosecutor's Office building in downtown Yerevan has been sealed off by law-enforcement agencies.
Reports also say President Robert Kocharian is due to make a televised address to the nation later today.
Khachatrian, 59, was appointed as prosecutor-general in May last year by then-President Levon Ter-Petrossian. He had previously served as a member of the country's Constitutional Court.
