Tehran, 13 July 1999 (RFE/RL) - Thousands of students defied a
government ban on demonstrations today and took to the streets in the
Iranian capital Tehran in a sixth day of protests against hard-line
clerics. Western news agencies report that anti-riot police fired tear gas at a crowd of several thousand protestors as they marched to the main campus of Tehran University. The official IRNA news agency said that security forces have been told to arrest all protestors and have declared the demonstrations illegal. This is the first time that supporters of the reformist President Mohammad Khatami have taken to the streets in such big numbers to confront hard-line Islamists.
