Russia: European Union Ministers Discuss Chechnya

Luxembourg, 10 April 2000 (RFE/RL) - EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg today behind closed doors to discuss the situation in Chechnya and other issues. Speaking before the meeting, EU's top foreign policy representative Javier Solana said that the ministers are to continue the discussion which took place last week in Moscow between an EU mission and President-elect Vladimir Putin. The ministers are to hear reports from Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama -- whose country now holds the EU rotating presidency -- and Solana.

Solana is also quoted by a Russian newspaper (Vremya) as saying that Russia's behavior in Chechnya is "unacceptable." He said the EU has never questioned Russian territorial integrity but it cannot justify "the means" used by Moscow against Chechen fighters.

Meanwhile, the Chechens continued attacks behind Russian lines. The Russian military says rebels attacked a police convoy near the village of Mesker Yurt, southeast of Grozny, and a police post in Grozny last night.
