Russia: UN Says Aid Distributed In Chechnya

Geneva, 28 April 2000 (RFE/RL) - The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says its aid supplies are now being distributed in Chechnya. Spokesman Ron Redmond today said in Geneva that the aid is being handed over to public soup kitchens, bakeries, and hospitals in the Chechen capital Grozny. Redmond said that some direct help is also being given to the very needy. Redmond said about 280 such needy people -- the old and infirm, children, and the wounded -- have been identified and receive aid in their homes.

The agency said other relief, including food and bedding, has also been delivered to Urus Martan. The agency is planning another relief convoy in the near future.
