Yugoslavia: Montenegrin President's Aide Shot Dead

Podgorica, Montenegro; 1 June 2000 (RFE/RL) - Reports from Montenegro say Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic's security adviser was shot dead by an unknown assailant last night in the capital Podgorica. Goran Zugic was shot near his home in the center of the city. Police cordoned off the area but declined any comment. Several top officials and underworld figures have been assassinated in Serbia this year, but it was the first such killing in Montenegro.

Serbia and Montenegro comprise the Yugoslav Federation led by Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Montenegro is seeking autonomy or outright independence from Yugoslavia because of Milosevic's autocratic policies.
