Yugoslavia: Draskovic Fine After Shooting In Montenegro

Budva, Montenegro, 16 June 2000 (RFE/RL) - Serbian opposition leader Vuk Draskovic is reportedly fine and recovering after unknown assailants tried to kill him last night. Draskovic was shot through the ear and another bullet grazed his temple when gunmen fired on his home in the Montenegrin resort town of Budva. The house was reportedly riddled with bullets. Draskovic was released from a hospital at his own request earlier today and is now in protective custody. Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister Dragisa Burzan said today there was more at stake than just killing Draskovic. "The place of the assassination attempt was chosen with the goal of spreading violence throughout Montenegro. It is an attempt to destabilize Montenegro, not only an assassination attempt on Mr. Draskovic."

Unconfirmed reports say Montenegrin police have arrested a number of suspects.
