Slovakia: President Reassumes His Powers

Bratislava, 31 July 2000 (RFE/RL) - Slovak President Rudolf Schuster, recovering in an Austrian hospital following a serious illness, announced today he is reassuming his presidential powers. He confirmed to reporters that by signing decrees appointing four deans of Slovak universities he is retaking his powers which had been temporarily transferred to the parliament speaker and the prime minister while he was in an induced coma. Schuster was transferred from Bratislava to Innsbruck on 28 June after nearly dying from complications following a series of operations on a perforated colon.

Schuster met with reporters this morning for the first time since his hospitalization.
