Yugoslavia: British Envoy Visits Detained Britons

Belgrade, 10 August 2000 (RFE/RL) - Britain's top envoy in Belgrade visited two British policemen detained by the Yugoslav army in Montenegro last week. It is the first time British officials have been allowed to meet the two since they were arrested along with two Canadians on charges of terrorism. A Canadian diplomat who met with the two Canadians today said they also appeared to be well treated and in good health. All four men yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charges against them in Belgrade's military court. Yugoslav authorities say the men had military equipment and explosives and were planning terrorist acts. British and Canadians officials say the men were on vacation. The legal proceedings are expected to continue with witness testimony tomorrow.
